'So You're Above the Law?': Video Captures Trucker Confronting State Trooper About His Driving — and What the Trooper Decided Not to Do About It

Trucker Brian Miner was pulled over for "unlawful use of his horn" in Illinois, launching him into a heated discussion with a trooper that seemed to take a turn after the state police officer learned he was being recorded.

"I don't know what that was about," the trooper with Illinois State Police said of the horn honking in a video of the encounter.

Miner came right out and explained why he made noise on the road.

"Because you were speeding and you had your cellphone in your hand," Miner explained to the trooper, in a video he posted to YouTube titled "Cop lies his a** off."

The trooper argued that law enforcement can use technology while driving.

"Oh so you're above the law?" Miner asked.

Earlier this year, the whole state enacted a hands-free cellphone law.

"You passed me, how fast were you driving? Are you above the speed limit as well?" Miner said after being pressed by the trooper.

"You passed me well over 70," Miner added after revealing to the trooper that he had his truck's cruise control set at 65 mph at the time.

As for his use of the horn, Miner said it was for a good reason.

"You were speeding. It was wet roads and you were speeding with your cellphone in your hand," Miner said, revealing at this point to the trooper that he was being recorded.

"So you honked at me because you thought I was speeding …," the trooper started.

"You were driving recklessly," Miner interrupted.

The trooper took Miner's documents and headed back to his cruiser.

When he returned, he told Miner he wasn't going to issue a ticket for unlawful use of the horn.

"I looked at your record. You got a ticket recently for the one headlight or something, it looks like, so I didn't write you a ticket. I didn't want to hurt your record," the trooper said.

The trooper said that he understands the trucker's use of the horn and admits he wasn't paying attention to his speed.

"Either way you were just trying to help me drive safely. I understand that," the trooper said, noting that he can't say if he was speeding or not but backtracked on being allowed to use his phone while driving. "Like you said, we all have to look out for each other out here."

After the trooper walks back to his cruiser, Miner packed up and said, "And that's what happens when they know you are recording."

In a comment, Miner acknowledged the positive support he had gotten from the video from "my fellow TRUE Americans."

Illinois State Police did not immediately respond to TheBlaze's request for comment on this viral video.
