"Do you think the United States will see the first gay president or the first woman president?"
The answer to that question posed to Joan Rivers by a cameraman on the streets of New York has the 81-year-old comic in hot water.
What did she say?
"We already have it with Obama, so let's just calm down."
But she didn't stop there: It's what she said next that's caused particular outrage.
As Rivers continued walking past, she turned her head and added, "You know Michelle is a tranny."
The cameraman responded, "I'm sorry, she's a what?"
"A transgender. We all know," Rivers said as she walked toward a building.
Watch:
The transgender community often considers the word "tranny" a slur. Shortly after the clip hit the web on Thursday night, gay groups and social media started reacting to Rivers' comments.
"Conservatives have long made jokes insinuating that the first lady is actually a transgender woman, but it's not often that a liberal-minded comedian — let alone one who credits much of her success to her devoted LGBT fan base — make this type of uninspired joke," the Advocate observed.
Joan Rivers called Obama gay and Michelle a tranny? Oh hell no, on so many levels. It's time to put the old bitch out of OUR misery.
