Video: Critics are calling Obama's response to saluting Marines 'shameful' and 'embarrassing
September 23, 2014
President Barack Obama caught some heat from his critics on Tuesday after he returned a formal military salute holding a coffee cup in his saluting hand.
While some argued it was no big deal, the Daily Caller noted that a Marine Corps manual states a person should not salute while “carrying articles with both hands or being otherwise so occupied as to make saluting impractical.”
Watch the video of Obama’s coffee cup salute as he exits his Marine Corps helicopter in New York before the United Nations General Assembly:
Many of the commenters on the White House’s Instagram page were not kind.
“Oh my gosh. How shameful. At least switch the cup to your other hand barry and give these MEN the respect that they DESERVE,” one user wrote.
“A disgrace to the office and a dishonor to the USMC!!!” another commented.
“This is embarrassing - 'whitehouse' needs to take this post DOWN now,” a different user complained.
A smaller portion of users seemed confused over the controversy, some calling it a "dumb reason" to criticize the president.
“It's hilarious to me that this offends people,” one person wrote.
