Teen Found a Wallet With $2,300 Cash Inside Then Did 'Something I Wish Everyone Else Would Do

"It was like a bunch of hundreds."

Tommy O'Connor might have more of an appreciation for the importance of finances than other teens his age because his family lives month-to-month.

With that in mind, when the California high school senior, walking to 7-11 to get a drink Tuesday, found a wallet on the ground stuffed with cash, he knew how important that money might be to its rightful owner.

"It was like a bunch of hundreds," O'Connor told KPIX-TV. "I didn’t count it when I saw it. I just thought it was probably someone’s rent or something,"

The news station reported that O'Connor turned the wallet in to a teacher's assistant and it was returned to its rightful owner. According to KPIX, it held $2,300 cash and belonged to a veteran.

Tommy O'Connor's parents are proud he did the right thing.

Sherry O'Connor, his mother, told the news station she texted her son after she learned what he did.

“I’m very proud of you son," she wrote. "Ms. Kalra called me. Wow your [sic] one in a million. Love you to the moon and back."

Her son's reply?

"You should be thanking yourself you raised me."

Tommy O'Connor told the news station what he did was just "something I wish everyone else would do."

The owner of the wallet gave Tommy O'Connor $50 cash as a "thank you" for returning it.
