LOS ANGELES (TheBlaze/AP) — Hikers discovered a “very old” human skull Saturday near the Hollywood sign in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, the LAPD said.

The finding was determined to be the top part of a “very old” human skull, KTLA-TV reported. Other body parts have not been located, but the search for more bones was expected to continue Sunday and include cadaver dogs.

Schatz said a coroner and homicide investigators closed access to the area and will search for possible additional evidence that may indicate how long the skull had been in the area, or the person’s cause of death.

Saturday’s finding came three years after human remains were discovered near the Hollywood sign in the Bronson Canyon area.

The body parts were determined to be those of Hervey Coronado Medellin, a 66-year-old retired airline worker, according to KTLA-TV.

His boyfriend was found guilty last October of strangling Medellin.

Covering 6 ½ square miles in the eastern Santa Monica Mountain range, Griffith Park is considered the largest municipal park in the nation. The Bronson Canyon area is a popular hiking destination.
