Mueller racks up another guilty plea in the Russian investigation - here's who it is

Another figure has pleaded guilty in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian investigation, it was announced Tuesday.

Who plead guilty?

Alex Van Der Zwaan is a lawyer who is connected to former Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates, who was also a business partner to former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort. He pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about when he communicated with Gates.

Zwaan is the son-in-law of a billionaire Russian oligarch, and worked at the law firm that helped Manafort and Gates when  they worked as political consultants in Ukraine. Prosecutors allege that Zwaan spoke to Gates and allegedly “deleted and otherwise did not produce emails,” even though he recorded the exchange.

Making false statements to investigators is a felony, and he could serve up to six months in prison.

A fourth guilty plea

Zwaan makes the fourth person to plead guilty in the Russian investigation headed by Mueller. The other three include Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, and former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates.

Zwaan is also the 19th indictment in the investigation, with 13 persons recently indicted for participating in the Russian influence and meddling of the 2016 election.

What about Trump?

Trump continues to deny any involvement in colluding with the Russians in the 2016 election, and Mueller has not yet presented any evidence directly substantiating such a claim.
