Trump bashes ABC News for bizarre 'fake news' report - here's how they responded
June 20, 2018
In a bizarre episode of "fake news" Wednesday, President Donald Trump called out ABC News for a chyron message that published incorrect news about former campaign manager Paul Manafort.
Here's what happened
A screenshot of the incorrect ABC News chyron began floating around on social media Wednesday. Trump posted it on his Twitter account and criticized the network.
"Look what Fake ABC News put out," he said. "I guess they had it prepared from the 13 Angry Democrats leading the Witch Hunt!" He added a hashtag message, #Stop the Bias.
The chyron read, "Manafort pleads guilty to 5 charges of manslaughter," under video of the president speaking about immigration. Manafort has been indicted on charges including bank fraud, but not on anything remotely close to manslaughter.
'There simply is no excuse'
ABC News released a statement apologizing for the error.
"We regret and apologize for the false lower third graphic that aired during our special report," the statement read. "We are investigating how incorrect information was in our system and how and why it was allowed to air."
"We apologize to our viewers and to Mr. Manafort," the statement continued. "There simply is no excuse for this sort of mistake."
