Alabama bar patrons beat a man to death after he hit a woman with his SUV and killed her, police say

Police say that bystanders beat a man to death after he allegedly ran over a woman near a bar parking lot and killed her.

The harrowing incident unfolded near a tavern on U.S. Highway 31 in Atmore in Alabama on Saturday just before midnight.

Police say that 24-year-old Hannah Martin was crossing the highway to get to the Tavern Sports Bar when 45-year-old Kenneth Harrison ran into her with his 2005 Chevy Tahoe.

Martin's body landed in the parking lot of the tavern where efforts to save her life failed, and she was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital, according to an investigation by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Harrison had pulled his truck into the parking lot, where an unknown number of tavern patrons and bystanders assaulted him and beat him so badly he was airlifted to a local trauma center. He was placed on life support before eventually dying.

State troopers are investigating both incidents.

Harrison was previously convicted of beating a man to death in 2011.

54-year-old Sanford Lee Ledbetter had been last seen in 2005 when skeletal remains were found a year later at M&M Mud Bog arena near Elberta. It took four years to identify the remains as belonging to Ledbetter, and investigators charged Harrison with his murder in 2011 in Baldwin County.

Harrison confessed to beating Ledbetter to death and pled guilty to manslaughter. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but that time was lessened because of the time he had already served in jail during trial.

The Atmore Police Department said officers were reviewing security video and interviewing bystanders who were present at the lethal incident at the Tavern Sports Bar.
