Howard Stern says he helped Donald Trump win the election — but had hoped to help Hillary Clinton win instead

Of course

Radio host Howard Stern said that he helped Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election because Trump agreed to appear on Stern's long-running radio show.

However, his plan to feature the man who would win the 2016 race may have backfired, because he regrets not hosting former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton — his preferred candidate for president.

What are the details?

Stern opened up about the Trump interview during a recent interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

"Donald Trump, hands down, whenever you put him on the air — now, this is before he was running for president — he was an open book," Stern said, adding that Trump would say "anything" while on air.

Appearing on ABC to promote his new book, "Howard Stern Comes Again," Stern said that he believed he helped the president by giving him a platform where he could be 100 percent candid.

"I wanted to see Hillary Clinton win," Stern admitted. "If she had come on the show — the way I helped Donald was I let him come on and be a personality. Whether you liked him or not ... people related to him as a human being."

Stern said that if he were able to host Clinton on his show, she may have come across as more likable to the general public.

"I thought that perhaps if she came on my show, we could've stripped away some of the pomp and circumstance or the tightness that comes with running for president and, like Donald, she could've been seen in a different light," he said.

What did he say about Trump's 'Vietnam'?

Stern also defended the president, with whom he has been friendly in the past, from what he believes is undue criticism over previous interviews.

During a 1997 interview, Trump joked that avoiding sexually transmitted diseases during his dating years was his personal "Vietnam."

In the interview, Trump told Stern, "It's amazing, I can't even believe it. I've been so lucky in terms of that whole world, it is a dangerous world out there. It's like Vietnam, sort of. It is my personal Vietnam. I feel like a great and very brave soldier."

That particular interview apparently stuck with Stern all these years later, as he was able to point to that one instance where he believed that the media treated Trump unfairly.

"It was in a very joking scenario," Stern told Stephanopoulos. "He was not comparing his life to a Vietnam vet. It was 'Ha-ha-ha and this and that.' When journalists took it and made it serious, I thought it was a little bit unfair."
