Massachusetts family calls police over 'hurtful' letter criticizing BLM, LGBTQ decorations and telling them to move to California

A family in Massachusetts called the police over a "hurtful" letter mocking their LGBTQ and Black Lives Matter flags, but they were told that it was speech protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

Dave Thomas of Hanover told WCVB-TV that his family was frightened by the greeting card that was sent to their house criticizing his left-wing decorations and telling them to move to another state.

"It was just kind of a little frightening," Thomas said. "They want us to take down the Pride flags. It says no one cares. 'Take down the Black Lives Matter signs.'"

The card was sent through the U.S. Postal Service, but it had no return address.

"Hi neighbor, thank you for helping keep our property taxes so low due to the fact your home is a [expletive]hole," the letter read.

The letter had a list of demands or suggestions.

• Paint it.
• Take down the pride flag. No one cares.
• Take down the BLM sign, BLM is a scam.
• Pull the Sanders sticker off the mailbox, it's the law.

"Finally, move to California or Oregon so you can enjoy living with the rest of the NUTS!" the letter concluded.

When the family called the police about the greeting card, they were told that there was nothing explicitly threatening in the message and that it was protected speech under the First Amendment.

Thomas went on to say that he wasn't going to take down the decorations.

"We have every right to put these flags in front of our house and to express our opinions," Thomas said. "I've been seeing a lot of people expressing their opinions in a lot more impolite ways."

The police told the family to report any other incident but told them no crime had been committed yet.

"We're just keeping our eyes open and making sure that nothing else happens because we want to make sure we keep our kids safe," Thomas concluded. "It's a little nerve-wracking, and it makes me angry and upset."
