Police released startling video of a family of four being kidnapped in California after they said a suspect in the crime had attempted to commit suicide before police were able to arrest him.

The incident unfolded in Merced County in the central valley of California near San Francisco on Monday.

The Merced County Sheriff's office said that its investigation began when a burning pickup truck belonging to 39-year-old Amandeep Singh was found abandoned. It contacted members of his family who "eventually" reported that the four people were missing.

Police then announced that three adults and an 8-month-old baby were kidnapped from the family's trucking company at gunpoint.

Security video released by the police showed a man entering the business with a gun and then leaving with four members of a family including a baby only 8 months old. The victims were identified as Aroohi Dheri, the child, Jasleen Kaur the child's 27-year-old mother, Jasdeep Singh the child's 36-year-old father, and Amandeep Singh, the child's uncle.

Some of the kidnapping victims appeared to have their hands zip-tied together.

Investigators said on Tuesday that they received a tip someone had used the debit card of one of the family members at an ATM machine in the city of Atwater. They identified him as 48-year-old Jesus Manuel Salgado and called him a person of interest.

They also said that Salgado had tried to commit suicide before law enforcement took any action. He was hospitalized and police said he could not speak to them due to his condition.

The family remains missing two days after the abduction and investigators are asking for help from the public to find them.

Merced County Sheriff Vernon H. Warnke said Salgado had a prior conviction for robbery that involved false imprisonment in 2005, and was paroled in 2015.
