NAACP delegates vote unanimously to call for Congress to impeach President Trump
July 23, 2019
This comes just a week after articles of impeachment overwhelmingly failed in the House of Representatives
NAACP delegates voted unanimously on Tuesday to urge Congress to impeach President Donald Trump. The group is holding its annual convention this week in Detroit.
What does this mean?
While the power to actually impeach a sitting president rests solely with Congress, as the nation's largest civil rights group, the NAACP holds a great deal of influence. However, it is not clear how many members of Congress will change their impeachment votes because of this development.
NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson tweeted after the vote that "Trump's misconduct is unmistakable and has proven time and time again, that he is unfit to serve as the president of this country."
What else?
The NAACP's annual convention has featured speakers including Speaker of the House Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who opposes impeachment, and Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Al Green (D-Texas), who both support it. While Pelosi is not a fan of Trump, she views impeachment attempts as an ineffective way of trying to counter Trump's agenda.
Despite Pelosi's misgivings, Green filed articles of impeachment in the House of Representatives on July 16. These were voted down overwhelmingly by a vote of 332 to 95. Green called for impeachment again during his speech at the NAACP convention on Tuesday.
But Tlaib promised attendees at the NAACP conference on Monday that she was "not going nowhere, not until I impeach this president." She's the same member of Congress who infamously promised on her first day in office that "we're gonna impeach the motherf***er."
