Secret Service agents protecting Naomi Biden open fire after 3 people try to break into SUV

Secret Service agents tasked with keeping President Joe Biden's granddaughter safe opened fire after three individuals attempted to break into an unmarked Secret Service vehicle in Washington, D.C, on Sunday.

Naomi Biden was joined by Secret Service agents while she was in the Georgetown neighborhood on Sunday night. Though Naomi was not inside the vehicle at the time of the attempted break-in, three individuals tried to gain access to the vehicle, which prompted one of the agents to open fire, according to the Associated Press.

The report noted that the Secret Service said in a statement that no one was struck during the gunfire. The three individuals who were involved were seen driving away from the scene in a red vehicle. As a result, the agency put out a regional bulletin for the Metropolitan Police to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) was reportedly carjacked around the Capitol last month by three armed individuals. They stole his vehicle, but they did not harm him, per the Texas Tribune.

The suspects in the incident were not immediately captured, but Cuellar's vehicle was eventually recovered by the authorities.

Washington, D.C., has witnessed a dramatic increase in crime over the past year, with nearly 26,000 incidents in 2023 alone, per WJLA. The Metropolitan Police have reportedly indicated that of all the crime reported, about 20% are considered acts of violence, which include sexual assaults, robberies, and homicides.

However, the most significant rise in crime has been due to the prevalence of car theft. More than twice as many vehicles have been stolen in 2023 than in 2022, according to the report.

Late last month, an off-duty federal security officer fatally shot a 13-year-old boy who attempted to steal his vehicle. The officer was apparently waiting for his shift to begin when two children approached him and demanded that he get out of the vehicle.

The incident, which took place on October 28, was the 821st recorded carjacking that had occurred in D.C. since the start of the year, according to DC News Now. With less than two months before the start of 2024, carjacking incidents have spiked 107% in 2023 compared to the year prior.

Many of the reported carjackings have been carried out by those under the age of 18.
