Conflict between equally valuable societal values is driving us toward a 'Me Generation
November 30, 2016
Roy Williams, co-author of "Pendulum: How Past Generations Shape Our Present and Predict Our Future", explains the concept of the pendulum and the way societies find themselves in conflict between two good competing values, such as justice vs. mercy or freedom vs. responsibility. These conflicts have driven cyclical social change in Western civilization for millennia, from a "me" society to a "we" society and back again.
"We will start moving in a direction — say, toward freedom." Roy explains. "And that will take us into a 'me' generation. A 'me' generation will last 40 years. And this has been going on with precision in Western society for 3,000 years. It can be documented."
