Kurtz: The media ‘knew’ Cain would ‘never’ get the nomination

Howard Kurtz, media reporter for The Daily Beast, made an interesting observation following Herman Cain‘s announcement that he would suspend his presidential campaign: The news media never understood Cain’s appeal and disregarded his chance of winning the Republican nomination for president from the beginning.
On Saturday, Cain had cable anchors filling time for hours until he finally walked out at his new headquarters in Atlanta and announced he was suspending his presidential campaign—with several hard shots at the media establishment.
“The pundits would like for me to shut up, drop out and go away,” he declared. That’s not true—the man was hugely entertaining for those of us in the press corps, even as we struggled to figure out his appeal.
[...]
Cain was never going to win the nomination; we all knew that. But he did have an appeal to conservative voters that journalists could never quite figure out.
In the end, Cain failed because of a disorganized campaign, his inability to master the issues, his stumbling responses to the women’s charges, and perhaps a naivete that his personal baggage could remain safely stored in the closet. He couldn’t even make it to Iowa. But he sure livened up the campaign.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 10:58amCain was 2nd teir for me because of his obvious lack in experience in foreign affairs. We just elected a president with no experience and look what happened. Now is really not the time to be electing another person inexperienced in foreign affairs.
That being said, I like Cain and I would have voted for him if he had won the nomination. Also, he needs to find out who/what was behind this mess. I personally didn’t find any of the women credible and I suspect there was someone motivating them financially. I pray he finds and exposes them for what they are. These people need to be prosecuted or they’re just going to keep doing this crap.

Posted on December 5, 2011 at 8:39amHe is correct the media is clueless. It’s because they have no concept of what honesty and integrity is so they don’t understand when someone uses those things. If someone does not “fit their mold” of being as polished or “perfect” by their definition then they are dismembered accordingly. I’m at the point of refusing to watch almost any network media and am getting very picky about what I even read on the internet. I’m sick and tired of the lies.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 4:41pmMr. Taylor won this battle. The media machine chewed up a good man and left his carcass for the buzzards. I cannot believe Americans are so stupid to not see through the media lynching. I’m simply baffled and quite frankly have given up on the country and the election. If we can’t even handle these false accusations, we certainly can’t handle Obama’s war chest. Glenn is right. Obama is going to get elected for four more years, and we can kiss out country goodbye.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 1:28pmI have to say I agree with DST1964, Herman started losing when he had to address the real issues. But from his first announcement, my husband and I were drawn to him, his ability to speak to the people, understood the people and loved this nation and our Lord. He did have a chance to be elected as far as we were concerned. The media went after him as soon as they saw he was a threat to the class/race warfare campaign the left and progressive began to run beginning in 2008. He wasn’t afraid to boldly state his Christianity and his love for America. And he wasn’t afraid to tell us that we COULD achieve anything we wished if we were willing to work hard and be responsible for our selves and our decisions, we didn’t need handouts from the gov’t or them deciding what was best for us ( or them by restricting and mandating our rights and behaviors, to pass them to others of their choosing). And Herman wasn’t afraid to say that we could save our nation, if we focused on what united us instead of falling for the rhetoric and the ” its those guys who did it to you, not us” crapola that so many on the left are touting at every opportunity. I’d still like Herman to run and I’m sorry he isn’t. And I am a white woman, so it isn’t just the minorities that would have liked to see him succeed.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 12:46pmTo you the insane: We are suppose to have new blood in this Presidential race, and what are we getting? The old established power not only still controls both parties and the Media, but it has successfully nullified the American Grass Roots Tea Party movement. It’s not a matter of believing or not in what the Media puts out, it’s where the Media Wind blows that counts, and the majority blows with the wind. We as a people have lost our minds long ago and each year our straight jackets are fitting us tighter and tighter.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 10:01amThose who control the media control the venue. Why be surprised. Our best bet’s to bankrupt the media giants and it will happen. That even includes FOX. I’ve been watching less and less FOX over the past few weeks. Only reason I still watch them is they are the best among a sad bunch of no excuses. I’m tired of the media being part of the news rather then just reporting an unbiased assessment of it. They may have the upper hand now, but it won’t be long before the only way they will be able to stay in business is for Soros to significantly fund their presence and we already saw what happened to Air America. lol
As for FOX, even their time is limited now that they decided too to be part of the news instead of just reporting it (not talking about Bill O, Sean Hannity or other obvious opinionated shows; Shepard Smith, need I say more, not to mention FOX and Friends (stopped watching this show years ago). :)

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 12:04amThe media saw Cain’s rise in the polls and went after him. He was a threat to Liberalism. Make no mistake about it. It had nothing to do with the way he ran his campaign. To the Liberal elite, he presented a threat to their ideology by presenting a differing view than most Blacks have ever been exposed to. A successful Black man who loves his country. He had to be silenced or many Blacks would have seen a self made Black man, who openly loves God, isn’t angry at Whites, in fact has many close White friends, married 30 yrs to the same Black woman, and who loves and is grateful to the country who gave him the freedom to succeed. End of story. Herman Cain is a patriot and a great American. He is not going away. He will continue to spread his message to people who are hungry for it. The media hasn’t won anything. God has a purpose for Herman Cain.

Posted on December 4, 2011 at 11:05amIs’nt it funny how a black man accused of having an affair can not be eligible to hold office in the eyes of the media but a white man who holds office, has an affair and then lies about it under oath is fit for a second term. Sumthin just dont add up. Who is the racists?

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 9:43pmWhat Kurtz actually wanted to write: “That’s not true—the boy was hugely entertaining for those of us in the press corps, even as we struggled to figure out his appeal. I mean, an uppity black leaving our plantation without permission and going off to join the Republicans? It’s unheard of!”

Posted on December 3, 2011 at 4:26pmI hate to say it, but I never thought Herman was qualified enough to be the President of the US. I loved his enthusiasm and candor, however, from one of his first interviews on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, I knew he wasn’t going to be able to cut it. He was completely oblivious on Isreal and other foreign affairs. He was sitting there with the Deer in the Headlights look and although he got a little better for a while, he then came right back to that same place a couple of weeks ago. Sure, the “sexual improprieties” that the media hammered him on didn’t help, but I just couldn’t see voting for a man who is so naive about so many issues. He was clearly not ready for prime time and that’s sad because we are so much looking for a person who’s not in the Washington Beltway that can pick up on the needs and fears of the country to take a hold of the reigns and run with it. It would be better if it were someone outside of Washington, but even if it were an insisider, I’d simply like it to be someone that we can trust. I knew I couldn’t really trust Herman the first day he responded to the allegations of sexual harrassment because he’d had two weeks to come up with his story and he simply fumbled the ball as soon as the media handed it to him. It’s too bad, but now I’m looking forward to a good fight, but I do hope that one of them begins to shine at the upcoming debates. I’m really tired of waiting. But I’m still an ABO gal…for sure!
