Human beings don't search out information that is uncomfortable to us

Human beings don't search out information that is uncomfortable to us

Mike Slater's talking about crazy college courses and "preparing the boy for the road." He begins introducing a course by the name of Religion 32, Queering God. The description of the course is, "The God of the Bible and later Jewish and Christian literature, is distinctively masculine, definitely male, or is he? If we can point out places in traditional writings where God is nurturing, forgiving and loving, does that mean that God is feminine or female?" To this Mike answers sternly, "No. No is the answer."

Recalling a response from a listener on a previous show, the listener replied, "Can you not even comment on it." This prompts Mike to wonder why there cannot be a discussion on the subject, or simply saying, "You're wrong, here's why."

This brings another conversation to mind for Mike where he had talked about fake news and news in general. The observation was about how, "Human beings don't search out information that is uncomfortable to us. It's against our nature. We tend to gravitate towards people, and books, and shows, and news that we already agree with because it makes us feel good."

Mike continues discussing the points of view we have as a culture, where we relate to reinforcement from others who agree with our beliefs and responses. Coming back to the college course that spawned the remark, he mentions the point of going to college saying, "The point of college is to challenge those ideas all the time, everyday, nonstop." he asks what the point is in taking four years of a degree program that reinforces your current beliefs and doesn't challenged or help solidify them.

"You can either prepare the boy for the road, or prepare the road for the boy."

The Mike Slater Show is live every Saturday from 3pm-6pm ET, only on TheBlaze Radio Network.
