Be like Ben Shapiro

Conservative Review

"The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks." —Luke 6:45

People like to say the eyes are a window into the soul, but if you really want to know what people think or feel, listen to their words.

The words Mark Duplass used this week to encourage "fellow liberals" to cross the aisle and follow Ben Shapiro were kind. Respectful. He reached out to an audience that is hostile to Ben's ideas and said, "I don’t agree with him on much but he’s a genuine person who once helped me for no other reason than to be nice. He doesn’t bend the truth. His intentions are good."

The words the Left used to denounce and shame Duplass, to force him to recant, and to attack Ben Shapiro and conservatism show that in their hearts, progressives don't want to live in a country with conservatism or conservatives.

"F*** no," "F*** him (Shapiro)," and "F*** you (Duplass)" for having the audacity to follow someone you disagree with on a social media site. Your "garbage take from Hell" is anathema because Ben Shapiro, the number one target of anti-Semitic attacks from white nationalists in 2016, supports "white nationalism." He's a evil racist who is putting "our lives and human rights" in jeopardy. Ben Shapiro wants "women to be chained to the kitchen and the poor to rot," don't you know? Shapiro wants the "mainstream acceptance of abhorrent ideas" like tax cuts, individual responsibility, the right to life for the unborn, and that transgenderism is a mental disorder and men and women shouldn't surgically mutilate their bodies to pretend to have a different gender.

These are the words the Left used to make Mark Duplass sorry for what he tweeted. These are the lies and smears the Left uses to make sure that no progressive — not Duplass, not Jeffrey Goldberg, not the New York Times editorial pageno one ever — commits the sin of giving legitimacy or space to a conservative or his ideas again.

These words are full of hate because their hearts are full of hate. Hate for Shapiro because Shapiro is a conservative, not because he's done anything wrong. Shapiro has done nothing wrong. Sure, he's made mistakes, like all of us, because he's a human being, like all of us. And you know what he does with those mistakes? He learns from them. He admits when he's wrong, even making a nice big list of "all the dumb stuff I've ever done" to show people where he's wrong (and to show his leftist enemies why he won't apologize for some things they hate him for). Most importantly, Shapiro works to make amends where he's been wrong and to be a better person, because he's good and decent and tells the truth, and that's what Mark Duplass admires about Ben enough to recommend him to his fellow liberals.

Well, it was what Duplass admired about him until the Left unleashed its fury. Now Duplass has recanted. He's deleted his tweet. He's asked for clemency for the thought crime of endorsing "hatred, racism, homophobia, xenophobia, or any such form of intolerance" by telling people to follow Ben Shapiro on Twitter.

Duplass has apologized, he's whimpered like a beaten dog, and he will never even think about saying a kind word of Ben Shapiro again. And that's just what the bullying, intolerant, hateful progressives wanted. This is the outcome they demand, and these are the tactics they'll use to pursue it.

Progressives won't rest until conservative thought is labeled across the board as "hate speech" and banned from social media. They'll get in the faces of young conservative women and yell sexual slurs like "neo-fascist Becky right here!" until conservative students understand they are not welcome on college campuses. They'll make sure conservatives who could be influential in the entertainment industry can't find decent work in Hollywood. They'll sue to shut down your bakery, your bed and breakfast, your wedding photography business, and your floral business if you don't give up your "homophobic" religious convictions. Are you a conservative working at a center-Left publication? They'll get a mob together and hound your employer until he fires you to make sure you don't have a platform to share conservative ideas. Work for a Republican administration? They'll show up at a restaurant and ruin your dinner to let you know you are despised and unwanted and can go to hell.

So what will you do when they come for you? Be like Ben Shapiro. Stand up to the bullies. Don't succumb to their hate. Don't apologize for conservatism. Don't apologize for believing in individual liberty. Don't apologize for inheriting a tradition that has developed from the cumulative experience of mankind through history. Don't apologize for believing in God. Don't apologize for believing in a natural law and in God-given rights. Don't apologize for free markets. Don't apologize for defending unborn babies. Don't apologize for believing in the sanctity of marriage and in the scientific differences between men and women.  Don't apologize when there's nothing to apologize for.
