Feds arrest Bangladeshi national for smuggling illegal aliens

U.S. immigration authorities say they have arrested a Bangladeshi national for his role in a transnational alien smuggling operation.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 39-year-old Milon Miah was paid to help bring 15 fellow Bangladeshi nationals into the United States between March 2017 and August 2018. In order to do this, the unsealed indictment also alleges that the suspect maintained a hotel in Tapachula, Mexico, where he housed and fed Bangladeshi immigrants before giving them plane tickets to northern Mexico, where they would meet other smugglers who would take them to the U.S. border.

A DOJ press release also explains that one of the co-conspirators in the trafficking scheme pleaded guilty to smuggling charges last week.

Miah was arrested Saturday upon his flight's arrival at the George Bush International airport in Houston, Texas.

“The arrest of Milon Miah represents a significant joint effort in ensuring national security and public safety,” said Shane Folden, special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) San Antonio. “HSI remains steadfast in vigorously investigating and dismantling transnational criminal networks that pose a threat to our nation.”

“Human smuggling rings endanger the security of the United States,” said DOJ assistant attorney general Brian A. Benczkowski. “This arrest sends a strong message that the Department is dedicated to holding accountable those who conspire to subvert our nation’s immigration laws for their own profit.”
