Jeff Sessions praises Trump in first ad for 2020 Senate bid

Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a bid to retake his old Senate seat on Fox Thursday night, telling host Tucker Carlson that he planned to file the necessary paperwork on Friday.

“I believe I have something to give,” Sessions said. “I have some convictions that I think need to be pushed. We need to get some Republicans moving; they haven’t been pushing hard enough to advance the Trump agenda, and so that’s what I look forward to doing, and I think I can contribute to that.”

The big question about a Sessions run is how his rocky relationship with President Trump that preceded his departure from the Department of Justice might play on the campaign trail. The former AG addressed that in a campaign ad released Thursday night.

"When I left President Trump's cabinet, did I write a tell-all book? No. Did I go on CNN and attack the president? Nope. Have I said a cross word about our president? Not one time. And I’ll tell you why,” Sessions says in the video. "First, that would be dishonorable. I was there to serve his agenda, not mine. Second, the president's doing a great job for America and Alabama, and he has my strong support."

When asked by Carlson whether or not he has the president’s support in this bid, the former senator responded “Well, I hope so.”

The Alabama Republican primary election is scheduled for March 3, 2020.
