Rand Paul: 'Massacre' of the unarmed if not for Capitol Police

Conservative Review

The gun grabbers are out en masse.

After a shooting in Alexandria, Va., during the GOP congressional baseball team’s practice that left at least five injured, including Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., Democratic Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe added his voice to those calling for more gun control.

“There are too many guns on the street,” McAulfiffe said during a news conference on the shooting.

While the Left will spend today politicizing the shooting, calls for gun control did not save a single person’s life today. The Capitol Hill police did.

But for the armed security detail provided for Rep. Scalise, many people could have died, said Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

"Everybody would've died except for the fact that Capitol Hill police were there," Paul said on MSNBC Wednesday. "Had they not been there, it would have been a massacre."

Speaking on CNN later, Sen. Paul described how the unarmed members of Congress and staff had no way to defend themselves.

"When you have no way to defend yourself ... the field was essentially a killing field," Paul said.

Police took three minutes to arrive on the scene. In that time, multiple rounds were fired between the shooter, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, and two Capitol Hill Police officers who, despite sustaining gunshot wounds, were able to take down the gunman. In a statement, President Trump said that the gunman is dead.

“The only reason why any of us walked out of this thing, by the grace of God, one of the folks here had a weapon to fire back and give us a moment to find cover. We were inside the backstop and if we didn’t have that cover by a brave person who stood up and took a shot themselves, we would not have gotten out of there and every one of us would have been hit — every single one of us,” said Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Mich., one of the Congressmen at the scene of the shooting. “He was coming around the fence line and he was looking for all of us who had found cover in different spots. But if we didn’t have return fire right there, he would have come up to each one of us and shot us point-blank.”

But for the immediate response for those two armed officers who were already on the scene, many more people could have died, as those members of Congress were unarmed and defenseless. The good guys with guns stopped the bad guy with guns before the police could get there.

The Left ought to think about that before they politicize an atrocity to advance their agenda.
