WATCH: OMB Director Mick Mulvaney shreds Nancy Pelosi's 'crumbs' at budget hearing
February 13, 2018
At a Senate Budget Committee hearing Wednesday, Senator Cory Gardner, R-Colo., and Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney launched some thinly veiled jabs at House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi over her comments disparaging rising American wages and bonuses as "crumbs."
Senator Gardner noted that several companies around the country are giving employees bonuses and raising their minimum wages. He asked Mulvaney to explain what happens to government tax revenues when taxes are cut and people make more money.
"It goes up," Mulvaney answered.
"Well, surely these are just crumbs?" Gardner followed up.
"I've often wondered if $1,000 would be a crumb if it came in the form of a government check," Mulvaney said.
Gardner pressed on, asking Mulvaney if he believed that $1,000 bonuses that could cover a family's utility costs for a year, a minimum wage boost, or salary bonuses were crumbs.
"Only a very wealthy person from San Francisco would think that was a crumb," Mulvaney said, smiling.
