Three people were killed Tuesday afternoon after an 18-wheel tractor-trailer clipped a school bus, which then struck a trailing bus, Mississippi police authorities have confirmed. Several other students suffered serious non-life-threatening injuries, including one who was air-lifted to a nearby hospital.
Two teachers were killed in the collision, along with the driver of the 18-wheeler.
The group of 62 high school seniors was returning to Ackerman High School from an admissions visit to the University of Mississippi.
According to local news reports, police believe the truck driver suffered a heart attack behind the wheel just before the crash. The names of the deceased have not been released.
At least 30 students were treated for minor injuries at the scene. Video from the scene shows the mangled vehicles:
