Video Shows Early AM Fire Engulfing Fuel Area at Miami Airport

MIAMI (AP) -- Firefighters extinguished a fire early Thursday that broke out in an area where fuel is kept at the Miami International Airport.

The fire was reported around 11 p.m. Wednesday and was brought under control around 1 a.m. Thursday, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Eric Baum said. There were no injuries, he said.

"It was a potentially disastrous fire," Baum said.

Inspectors and technicians early Thursday were trying to determine what caused the fire and where it began. Baum said he did not know how many fuel tanks were involved in the fire.

The fire wasn't near any runways or terminals at the airport. Only one flight was delayed for about 45 minutes because of the fire, which happened at a time when there are few flights, airport spokesman Greg Chin said.

Passengers should contact their airlines Thursday morning to confirm that flights are on time, Chin said, adding that fueling capacity is expected to be at 40 percent for early flights.

Airport workers were trying to restore normal fueling operations, Chin said.

The Perimeter Road entrance to the airport was closed, but employees could still access the employee parking lot. Motorists heading to the airport should to take either State Road 836 or State Road 112, officials said.
