NYC Woman Loses Lifetime Disability Alimony After Blogging About Her Belly Dancing Passion claim

"The ex would love to fry me with that."

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City woman who was getting $850 a month in alimony because she was supposedly disabled and unable to work had her payments slashed after her ex-husband spotted online photos of her belly dancing.

Brian McGurk went to court after discovering a blog that showed his 43-year-old ex-wife dancing at a gallery.

In other Internet postings, she wrote about dancing vigorously for several hours every day.

Dorothy McGurk told the court that the dancing was physical therapy for injuries she suffered in a car accident in the mid-1990s.

A county judge didn't buy it — and reduced her payments to $400 per month.

The judge also ordered her to pay her ex-husband's legal fees and 60 percent from the sale of their home.

Daily Mail:

'My belly dancing is the reason why I adore myself so much,' McGurk posted on the blog, including photos of herself grooving at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, a new age gallery in Chelsea.

'Today I decided to dedicate myself more to my dance,' she wrote. 'Even though I dance everyday, it's not enough. It won't be enough until I dance for you all, until you feel my euphoria.

'Today as I danced myself silly, I lifted my head and elongated my neck as I swirled around,' she wrote in another post. 'And then it happened, I got really, really high.'

In one Facebook entry, a friend asked Dorothy McGurk why she had not posted photos of herself from a recent belly-dancing performance.

'Gotta be careful what goes on line pookies,' she answered. 'The ex would love to fry me with that.'

NY Daily News:

A Staten Island woman who lost her hefty divorce deal when her ex-hubby showed a judge her online belly-dancing photos said she was just posing in the pics.

"I wasn't really belly-dancing in them," Dorothy McGurk, 43, told the Daily News Saturday. "I was posing. In some of them I was moving a veil around with my arms, but I wasn't belly-dancing."

She said the photos showed her and another woman, but that only the other woman was dancing. "My girlfriend in front of me was belly-dancing with a sword," she said, refusing to provide the photos. "I was just standing behind her waving a veil."

Dorothy McGurk also said she has spoken to crowds about belly dancing and uses similar exercises as physical therapy.

"The only thing I do are gentle exercises," she said. "One of them is undulating. What you do is suck in and flex the muscles of your belly."

Dorothy McGurk, who said she does the undulating exercise lying down, said she also uses the exercises to stretch her hips.

"Stand up and push your hip side to side until you feel a gentle stretch in the hip," she said. "I do my stretching exercises and undulating every day.

"It alleviates my pain and it builds a little bit of muscle," she added. "I have to move somehow. It also helps me to lose weight."
