ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) — Driver Joe Foster was hospitalized after a crash with Gunter Schaldach during a Grand Am race at Road America on Saturday that sent Schaldach's car flipping over a fence and into the woods.

Schaldach said he was "totally fine" after the spectacular accident, but Foster was airlifted to a Milwaukee-area hospital. A series spokesman said Foster was awake and alert, but the extent of his injuries was unclear.

Schaldach's Camaro had a brake malfunction and plowed into the back of Foster's Mazda going into Turn 1 at the four-mile road course. Schaldach's car skidded at high speed through a runoff area and into a tire barrier — then flipped completely over a retaining fence and into a wooded area behind the turn.

In a radio interview, Schaldach estimated his car was going about 160 mph when he wrecked.
