Republican school board member a little dramatic over Michelle Obama campaigning at local high school
July 10, 2012
Michelle Obama is scheduled to hold a campaign rally for President Barack Obama today at a local high school in Miami. School board member and Republican candidate for Florida State House Renier Diaz de la Portilla is really upset about it.
"The use of public schools whose only focus should be to educate our children for political gain is downright wrong,” Diaz de la Portilla said in a statement to the Miami Herald. “Don’t these liberals have boundaries? Our schools are places for learning, not places for politicking.”
Gag.
Politicians, of course, campaign at public schools all the time. Particularly in the summer when the kids are out.
The school board attorney said the Obama team is renting the school (with campaign funds), which any group is allowed to apply to do.
According to Portilla's LinkedIn profile, he's "experienced in the world of Alternative Dispute Resolution." Time to put those skills to use.
