Obama's Drop in VA Polls Blamed on 'Racism' and...Vacations? State Sen. Says So

"for the the first time in my life I've been able to convince my children finally that racism is alive and well"

A new poll released by Quinnipiac University on July 19th, shows the President and Mitt Romney are tied 44-44% in the state of Virginia. Based on those numbers, Romney has erased the 8-point lead that President Obama held in March. That data is causing many Democrats to scramble for answers. One state official has even decided to play the race card in explaining it.

Following President Obama's two-day campaign swing through Virginia last week, many expected his poll numbers to increase over Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. That did not happen. According to State Senator Louise Lucas, the problem comes from racism and vacations. Yes, you read that correctly. State Sentator Louise Lucas, one of the President's key campaign spokespersons in Virginia says the problems are rooted in Mitt Romney's racism and vacations.

These curious comments were heard during a recent radio interview with Louise Lucas on the John Fredericks Show out of Hampton Roads, VA. When confronted with the hard data from the Quinnipiac poll, Ms. Lucas actually said:

"I think the big problem is that people are not paying attention to the messages because they are on vacation with their kids. It's summertime. It's hot."

And then, when asked to address Romney's claim that President Obama cannot fully understand the economy because he has never worked in the private sector, Senator Lucas played the race card on Romney and all of America, stating:

"Mitt Romney he's speaking to a ... segment of the population who does not like to see people other than a white man in the White House or any other elected position.Let's be real clear about it. We know what's going on here, and some people may be afraid to say it, but I'm not. I'm not afraid to say it. He's speaking to that friends out there who do not want to see anybody other than a white person in a leadership position.  ... This is not about anything other than they don't want President Barack Obama in office ... .

Host John Fredericks seemed taken aback by this statement and pressed the state Senator asking her if she really believed that this was about race?  Lucas doubled down and brought her children and the entire country into the mix, reaffirming:

"I absolutely believe it is all about race and for the the first time in my life I've been able to convince my children finally that racism is alive and well... . All across this nation, and especially in Virginia."

The incredible interview continued with the State Senator also placing 100% of the blame for the country's current economic woes on President Bush. She even stated that Obama would need more than one term to fix the problems:

President Barack Obama did not create this economic mess we're in. Everybody knows that this stuff happened under President George Bush and they're trying to dump it on the president. ... And the mess that was created could not be solved in two or three or four years. Intelligent people understand that.

Perhaps Ms. Lucas has forgotten the President's previous statement on the economy and his ability to fix it:

"If I don’t have this done in three years, it’s going to be a one-term proposition."

Author's note: You may remember State Senator Lucas  from a 2007 article that profiled the legislator and her massive shoe collection that was photographed for the story:
