DNC Hotels Plagued by Drugs, Prostitutes and Bedbugs? Read the Horror Stories

After a long day on the floor at the Democratic National Convention, one might look forward to a clean, restful place to lay one's head for a couple of hours before repeating the chaos for the next few days. But reports of less than satisfying accommodations have been surfacing.

According to The Washington Times, nine of the hotels suggested for Democratic delegates in Charlotte, N.C., had reported bedbug incidents. Although county health officials said the hotels were inspected July 1 to meet an annual requirement, websites where former guests can report bedbug sightings might suggest the blood-suckers are still hanging around:

A search of BedBugRegistry.com brings up more than 30 Charlotte-area hotels where visitors have reported bedbugs, including nine hotels that will host at least 10 of the state delegations attending this week’s convention.

Some of the hotels — such as the DoubleTree by Hilton Charlotte Airport hotel, which will host the Connecticut delegation — have had a single report more than a year ago. But the Drury Inn & Suites Northlake, which will house Ohio delegates, had a report from an anonymous Internet user claiming there were “numerous bugs” during a stay in April after several pest-free visits.

National Review is reporting subpar accommodations slated for journalists as well. John Fund wrote that National Review journalists were referred to two Knight Inn properties, which had comments on TripAdvisor that included "scared to death" and "pimps and prostitutes at night." A review of one Knights Inn location by a group of women staying there reads that they were advised by the police to find other accommodations. Here are a couple similar comments:

Fund goes on to report how one of National Review's correspondents describes the hotel:

The Knights Inn was the worst hotel I have ever seen, and I’ve stayed in many bad motels in my life. Two guys were dealing drugs in the room next to me, and a prostitute was working out of the parking lot. And this was in the early afternoon. The room itself was dirty, full of other people’s stuff, etc.

I have never requested a hotel change in 3 years at NR. This was the first time I felt absolutely compelled.

Fund notes journalists with other publications have experienced poor accommodations too. TheBlaze editors covering the DNC said they almost relocated to the Knights Inn described above. Keyword: almost. Assistant Editor Tiffany Gabbay said TheBlaze writers are staying at another area hotel, which she describes as "pretty gross," smelling of cigars and with a potential black mold situation.

The Daily Caller staff told Fund they were staying at a Quality Inn, calling it "the worst hotel you can imagine." The two Quality Inns in the Charlotte area seem to have rated a touch better than the Knights Inn -- some called it "average" and what you would expect for the price -- but they still have their fair share of poor reviews:

To the city's defense, Fund states the lack of acceptable choices could be due to the Charlotte's smaller size. Gabbay seconded this sentiment.

"There are only a couple nice hotels and those are all occupied by those 'higher up' on the food chain -- we lowly types are relegated to roadside motels an hour away (where they had us before) or just overall subpar places," she said. "That is a risk they took by choosing such a small town as Charlotte where there aren't really good accommodations."
