I'm Gay': Alleged Teen Girl's Interesting Way of 'Coming Out' to Her Parents Goes Viral

"Your acceptance would be the icing on the cake."

A Tumblr user, an alleged 15-year-0ld girl named Laurel, took a unique approach to letting her parents know that she's a lesbian. The teen baked a cake (she called it a "gayke") and used icing to place two simple and succinct words on it: "I'm gay." Then, she penned a "coming out" letter explaining her sexuality and left out both the dessert and the note for her parents to discover.

In her letter, the girl used a number of puns, taking a humorous approach to a very serious subject. Aside from asking for her parents love, she also noted that her friends have been extremely supportive. Laurel posted the above picture on Tumblr on Jan. 27, quickly sparking viral coverage of her experience. The message on the cake reads:

good morning parents,

i'm gay. i've wanted to tell you for a long time. i thought doing it this way would be a piece of cake. i hope you still love me. i mean, it's hard not to love someone who baked you a cake.

all my friends know and still love me. your acceptance would be the icing on the cake.

i hope you, much like this cake, are not in tiers.

i hope we can look back on this and say "boy, this one really takes the cake."

it gets batter.

love, laurel (sorry for so many puns)

In an update post Laurel explains her family fully accepted her. Additionally, she expressed a thankfulness for the support she received from the online community as well.

"My mom saw it and cried of happiness. We hugged and cried together," she wrote. "Then, we all ate the cake and talked. I am very luck to have such supporting parents and to have so much support from you guys. Thanks everyone!"

While not much information is given about Laurel and her background, an "about" section on her Tumblr page claims that she started her blog as an Ellen DeGeneres fan effort, but that her story about coming out through the cake has led her to expand the blog. She writes "I now give LGBT advice and cake all the time always!"
