Vogue profiles the 'mystical communion' of Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly

The newest issue of Vogue (out Feb. 19) features a profile on former Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly.

From the article:

In person, Giffords is a slim, fragile-looking woman in sensible thick-soled black shoes who, after two years of physical therapy, still moves in the slow, slightly precarious way of one much older. Yet there’s nothing depressing about her. She’s a warm and happy presence with something of Diane Keaton to her aura. She smiles a lot, meets your eyes confidently through her black-rimmed glasses, and is ever ready to laugh. She’s absolutely attuned to everything going on around her, and shares an almost mystical communion with her husband.

In fact, she and Kelly have a relationship that’s fascinating and deeply touching in ways they never could have imagined before their wedding in late 2007. (Kelly has two teenage daughters from an earlier marriage.) Until the assassination attempt, they were a classic power couple who did demanding work on parallel tracks—she was in D.C. representing her Tucson congressional district; he was in Houston preparing to fly the space shuttle Endeavor. Now, in the aftermath of tragedy, the two are closer than ever, says Giffords’s good friend (and onetime office manager) Joni Jones. Disaster has taken their marriage to a new level of connection and intimacy.

Since the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., Giffords and Kelly have become outspoken advocates of gun control, Giffords herself having been a victim of gun violence.
