Carter: Obama 'Embraced' & Thanked My Grandson For Helping Break the Romney '47 Percent' Story

Noted peanut farmer Jimmy Carter in a CNN interview Thursday night claimed President Barack Obama actually “ran across the room” and thanked James Carter, the former president’s grandson, for his role in bringing failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” comments to light.

“When James went to meet President Obama, President Obama ran across the room, embraced him and thanked him profusely for his time,” Carter told CNN's Piers Morgan.

You're all familiar with the story: James Carter gave the secretly shot footage to Mother Jones’ David Corn who, in turn, made Romney’s remarks a major talking point in the 2012 presidential election.

“There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it,” the former Massachusetts governor says in the video.

“That, that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax,” he continued, adding “so our message of low taxes doesn’t connect.”

Corn was rewarded for his efforts with a George Polk Award, one of journalism's highest honors.
