Why Is Facebook Forcing a 104-Year-Old to Lie About Her Age?

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. (TheBlaze/AP) -- Although many women would be just fine with lying about their age, a 104-year-old Michigan woman who is proud of her many years isn't being allowed to share her true age on Facebook.

The social media site has a flaw that won't let Marguerite Joseph list her age beyond that of 99 years.

Gail Marlow, Joseph's granddaughter, said when she tries inputting her grandmother's birth year as 1908, Facebook changes it to 1928. So for the past two years, the Grosse Pointe Shores centenarian has remained 99 - online, anyway.

Joseph is legally blind and can't hear well, but Marlow reads and responds to all her Facebook messages.

Marlow tells WDIV-TV she'd "love to see" Joseph's real age posted and chalks it up to "a glitch in the system." As WDIV also pointed out, Joseph has seen nearly all the technological changes there have been in communication over the last 100 years and is pleased to be able to keep in touch with friends and family using social media.

Marlow said that Joseph will turn 105 in April -- something she hopes to be able to record accurately on her grandmother's profile page.

Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it's working to fix a problem limiting used of pre-1910 birthdates.

Last year, a woman claimed to be the oldest person on Facebook at 101 years old. Given that Joseph and perhaps others born before 1910 cannot accurately list their years, this woman appears to not be the oldest after all.
