A Homemade Lightsaber That Can Actually Set Things on Fire? Yes!

"...there isn't really much else out there to describe this laser."

Drake Anthony -- a.k.a. the DIY Laser Guy --  usually tries to avoid using the term lightsaber when referring to his homemade projects, "but there isn't really much else out there to describe this laser," he wrote in the description of his latest video.

Using a "beast" of a laser -- a 3000mW blue laser and the most powerful Anthony say he has ever used -- he tests the beam against a variety of flammable materials.

Paper goes up in flames. Awesome "flash paper" sparks quite a blaze. What appears to be electrical tape smolders.

He demonstrates how the laser moves a little, plastic car along the floor and then switches to a ping pong ball. And, well, take a look at the video to see what happens to that:

The laser is a 9mm 450 nanometer laser diode that runs on two 18650 lithium ion batteries and is legal to own in the United States, according to Anthony, who noted he wore goggles for the demonstration.

It's so strong, he said he doesn't even really like working with such lasers, but did so because he knew his subscribers would find it entertaining.
