DIY Instructions to Modify a Nerf Gun Into an Intimidating Automatic Sentry Firearm

Taking an intimidating looking but relatively innocent Nerf gun -- it uses foam darts for ammo after all -- a DIY hacker has modified it with electronics into an automatic weapon.

Starting with a Nerf Vulcan, the woman with the username BrittLiv on Instructables, who admits to be "obsessed with Nerf guns," ups the plastic gun's game by outfitting it with a system that turns it into a sentry gun.

What started off looking like a yellow and orange toy that retails for about $55 on Amazon, turned into a black firearm that tracks and shoots.

Using instructions from Rudolf Labs for the sentry system electronics, BrittLiv put a webcam on the gun with a computer to monitor the video feed. Motors allow the gun to aim and fire the trigger.

"It's nearly impossible to escape it," BrittLiv said in her video.

As an added twist, she even made sure the system was able to determine if a target might be wearing a shirt with an Instructables robot logo. If they were, they wouldn't trigger a shot by the gun.

"My main aim was for it to look awesome; which was difficult to achieve removing the front part of the gun," she wrote. "But I managed to accomplish this without removing the barrel, and I'm really happy with how it turned out!"
