Chinese Op-Ed: World Should Be 'De-Americanized

“… the cyclical stagnation in Washington..."

In the face of the U.S. government shutdown and debt-ceiling debate, China's official news agency has called for a "de-Americanized world," saying the U.S. is hypocritical and possesses a dysfunctional government, according to the International Business Times.

The Xinhua news agency also called the U.S. a civilian slayer, prisoner torturer, and meddler in others' affairs, the IBT notes.

"As U.S. politicians of both political parties are still shuffling back and forth between the White House and the Capitol Hill without striking a viable deal to bring normality to the body politic they brag about, it is perhaps a good time for the befuddled world to start considering building a de-Americanized world," the editorial declares.

It also asks why the self-declared protector of the world is creating disarray in the financial markets by failing to fix political differences over key economic policy.

"... the cyclical stagnation in Washington for a viable bipartisan solution over a federal budget and an approval for raising debt ceiling has again left many nations' tremendous dollar assets in jeopardy and the international community highly agonized," the agency said.

According to US Treasury Department data, China is the biggest foreign owner of U.S. Treasuries at $1.28 trillion as of July, the IBT says, and holds close to $3.5 trillion of dollar-denominated assets.

The editorial also calls for an end to the U.S. dollar as the international reserve currency.
