What Are You Talking About?': The Anti-Republican Attack Charlie Rangel Made That Caused a CNN Anchor to Laugh Out Loud

Congressman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday tried to compare House Republicans to the Confederates, claiming that their goal is to “bring down the government” -- and was met by laughter from a CNN anchor.

“I’m certain that history is going to record that this is the lowest moment that we’ve had in the Congress,” Rangel said of Washington’s gridlock.

“This is all about a handful of people who got elected as Republicans that want to bring down our government,” he added during his CNN interview. “You can see it in the streets. You can see where they’re coming from. The same way they fought as Confederates, they want to bring down the government and reform it.”

Rangel's remarks were made in reference to House Republicans’ latest proposal to delay the Obamacare medical device tax by two years.

“Whoa,” Banfield said. “I’m sorry. Are you likening -- and I’m only assuming that you’re referring to the Tea Party members who are pretty intransigent on their views -- are you liking them to Confederates?”

Rangel responded by noting that the region of the country that is most heavily Republican is the South.

“Well, I can tell you this, if you look at the states that they control, take a look at the Dixiecrats, see how they went over to the Republican Party,” he said.

“Michele Bachmann is not from Dixie,” Banfield laughed. “What are you talking about?”

Banfield reminded Rangel that like it or not, House Republicans have an equal vote in this debate:
