Jonathan Van Meter, the guy who wrote the born-from-the-ashes New York Times Magazine profile on Anthony Weiner (before he officially announced his bid for New York mayor), has a warning for his colleagues: “No one should interview Anthony again."
Van Meter's remark on Weiner comes in a GQ story about the infamous Times Magazine piece and how it was notoriously absent of the fact that Weiner had continued sexting women outside his marriage after he resigned from Congress in 2011.
"He is the least reliable narrator of his own story that I have ever encountered," Van Meter told GQ. "And I’ve interviewed people in prison, who have chopped people up—prisoners who are charming and funny and smart. And well dressed.”
In the GQ piece, Weiner is critical of Van Meter's profile, saying he wasn't "tough enough" and that he should have asked about the sexting. "I thought there’d be thousands of questions about the sexting," Weiner said. "But there wasn’t a lot of conversation about that."
Weiner reasons that had the Van Meter profile contained the details about his sexting, his bid for mayor wouldn't have faced so many questions about it.
