From White House pool reports filed Sunday by the Wall Street Journal's Colleen Nelson, who was covering the first family's Hawaii vacation:

After more than two low-key weeks on Oahu, President Obama's vacation has come to an end. The president and daughters Malia and Sasha arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam at 8:39 p.m.

As noted earlier, First Lady Michelle Obama is remaining in Hawaii for a few extra days to spend time with friends ahead of her birthday. She will be 50 on Jan. 17.

The president, Malia and Sasha spent a couple minutes chatting with folks on the tarmac. Malia and Sasha boarded the plane, and the president, wearing a button-down shirt and gray pants, strode over to greet service members and the small crowd assembled behind a barrier.

"Hello, hello, hello!" Obama said to the group. He asked [White House Trip Director] Marvin Nicholson to hand him a Sharpie so he could sign the orange cast of a young man with a broken arm. After a few minutes of hellos and handshakes, Obama bounded up the stairs of Air Force One. ...

Nearly 10 hours after departing Hawaii, President Obama arrived at Joint Base Andrews. Air Force One touched down at 9:55 a.m. under gray skies. ...

The president, Malia and Sasha emerged from the plane looking more bundled up, as Kailua's 80 degrees and sunshine has been replaced by 36 degrees and icy slush. The president wore a black jacket over his button-down shirt and gray pants.
