Man Gives 75 Cents to a Homeless Man. Minutes Later, He Was in Handcuffs in the Back of a Police Cruiser.

A man was detained and handcuffed for more than an hour by law enforcement officials in Houston moments after he gave a homeless man 75 cents.

Greg Snider said he was in Houston on business when a homeless man approached his car window and asked for spare change.

"That's when the homeless man came up to me. He said, 'Hey my name is Dave. I'm from Dallas. I'm down on my luck. Do you have any change,'" Snider told KPRC-TV.

Snider gave the man the aforementioned 75 cents and drove away.

"I had no idea at all what was about to happen," said Snider.

As Snider pulled onto the highway, he said a police car came up behind him and started flashing its lights and sirens.

"I put my hazards on to let him know, 'Hey, I see you,'" said Snider. "This is a really bad part of I-10 to be pulled over on, so I was trying to find a safe place to pull over."

After Snider came to a stop, he said the police officer rushed at him, screaming and yelling.

"He's screaming. He's yelling. He's telling me to get out of the car. He's telling me to put my hands on the hood," said Snider.

Snider was pulled from his car, handcuffed and thrown in the back of the police cruiser. He said ten more police cars showed up at the scene.

"They're like, 'We saw you downtown. We saw what you did,'" said Snider. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me? I gave a homeless man 75 cents.'"

Yes, it turns out the police thought he had exchanged drugs with the homeless man. The police then asked if they could search his car. Snider gave them the go ahead.

Authorities brought out drug-sniffing dogs and proceeded to search snider’s car for more than an hour, ending in a big nothing.

"He said everything was a misunderstanding and that I was free to go," said Snider.

The officers laughed over the mix-up – but Snider wasn’t amused. Claiming that police officers damaged his car during their search, he has filed a complaint with the police Internal Affairs Department.

“Local 2 contacted Houston police. A spokesperson confirmed Greg Snider filed a complaint. Police would not comment further about the incident,” KPRC-TV reported.
