My Gosh, That's a Person': Newspaper Delivery Man Rescues Person Buried in Snow Bank at 2 A.M.

"The guy's hands were as white as the snow."

Al Slot was driving at newspaper delivery truck at around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, but when he saw an empty car on the side of the road and a dark object in the snowy highway median about a half mile later, his instinct told him to stop.

As Slot first headed westbound on I-96 toward Muskegon, Mich., he told MLive he thought it was a tire in the snow bank. When he got out of his truck and walked closer, he found out it was actually a 63-year-old man.

"I thought, 'My gosh, that's a person,' and I ran over to help," Slot told MLive. "He was laying on his side and waving his arm."

The man, whose name was not released, was frozen and couldn't speak clearly.

"He wasn't much help getting out of there; he was a frozen stiff mess," Slot told MLive.

The Good Samaritan had to flag down other driver to help him dig the stuck man out of the snow. A woman in an SUV also stopped and let them warm up in her car until the authorities arrived.

"The guy's hands were as white as the snow," Slot said. "I don't know how long he had been in there, but he was not in good shape."

It is unclear at this point what the man was doing out on the road and where he was going. Slot told MLive he didn't have a coat on and was only wearing pajama bottoms.

"It was pretty odd that he was out there like that," Slot said.

Given the time of night, Slot feels like it was "by the grace of God" that he even looked in the direction of the stuck man.

"If someone hadn't seen him, who else would have looked?" Slot said to MLive.
