What This Woman Did to a Cop's Pizza Got Her Arrested

"...was observed by me depositing bodily fluid on commercial food..."

A Tennessee Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department deputy walked into a Pizza Hut last week to pick up an order. He didn't remember the woman who was about to serve him his pie, but she remembered him and might have been out for revenge.

When Deputy Frank Rogers told Amanda Engle, a manager at the pizza chain in Erwin, he was picking up an order, she told him it would be just a few more minutes. He sat down in front of the counter, in line Engle's line of sight.

We'll let the police report explain what happened next (emphasis added):

As the defendant removed the pizza from the oven, I observed her cut her eyes and look at me. The defendant leaned over the pizza she had began to slice and I observed her spit on the pizza, which had been purchased by me. I immediately called her attention to the matter and asked if she knew me, she replied "Yes, you're Frank Rogers." I told her I needed to talk to her manager, she stated "I'm the manager." I told her to notify her boss. She then contacted her boss who I spoke with on the phone.

[…]

The defendant was observed by me depositing bodily fluid on commercial food, which had been purchased by me. The defendant did, in a public place, create a hazardous or physically offensive condition by an act which served no legitimate purpose.

As a result, the deputy placed Engle under arrest and booked her at the county jail.

The Smoking Gun reported county Sheriff Mike Hensley said a week before this alleged spitting incident, Engle had pleaded guilty to the DUI case Rogers cited her for and received a sentence of two days in jail and a $350 fine.

The Johnson City Press reported the pizza was intended for Rogers and his family, not members of the sheriff's department.

"Pizza Hut has been a good, reputable business in Unicoi County for several, several years," Hensley told the newspaper. "We've patronized the Pizza Hut and will continue to patronize it. It's not their fault. It just boiled down to a bad employee."

Engle denied spitting on Rogers' pizza in a phone interview with WJHL-TV.

"This is a ridiculous accusation," Engle told the news station. "I didn't do it. I wouldn't jeopardize my job or my family over this man."

Even still, the 29-year-old was fired from Pizza Hut after the incident and will appear on court on charges of disorderly conduct on Feb. 20
