We're not just hashtagging': Glenn Beck shows CNN's Don Lemon what real activism looks like

Glenn Beck on Monday had a message for CNN's Don Lemon about the meaning of real activism.

"We talk about child sex slavery on this program," Beck began, speaking on radio. "This audience has raised now, I think, a million and a half dollars, maybe a little bit more, to rescue children who are actually in this situation. Now there's an audience that's actually doing something. We're not just 'hashtagging.'"

Beck's message was a response to Lemon's attack Thursday on TheBlaze's Will Cain. After Cain questioned "hashtag activism," saying “putting a tweet up with a hashtag on it” doesn’t mean you did your “duty” today, Lemon exploded, demanding to know what Cain had done for the hundreds of girls abducted by Boko Haram in Nigeria.

As Lemon saw it, without the worldwide Twitter hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, the abducted Nigerian schoolgirls would have almost no hope of being rescued.

“What have you done?” Lemon shouted. “What did you do for those girls? … Besides sit here on television and criticize other people’s efforts, if you’re so concerned about it, what have you done?”

Beck said there is nothing wrong with "hashtagging," but agreed with Cain that it is a mistake to believe that you are actually "saving children" if you merely include a hashtag on a tweet.

There is far more people can do to help, Beck argued.

Among other charitable causes, Beck and his audience have gotten involved with Operation Underground Railroad, a private organization comprised of former U.S. Military and intelligence officers that rescues children sold into sex slavery worldwide.

As a direct result of their donations, Operation Underground Railroad founder and CEO Tim Ballard said in April, dozens of children have already been rescued, and at the time, they were about to save 40 more.

"These are children that would not have been saved if it were not for your audience,” Ballard said.
