Shock Report: Islamist Rebels Kill 102-Year-Old, Burn His Family

"Some members of the family were burned alive..."

Islamist rebels fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad reportedly shot dead a 102-year-old man in his bed and killed the rest of his family living with him, a Syrian monitoring group is reporting.

Agence France-Presse quoted the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights which reported that militants with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Sunday killed the man’s son, grandson, great-granddaughter and her mother.

The rampage occurred as part of a larger attack on the village of Zanuba in the area of Hama. The Observatory said, “Some members of the family were burned alive, others killed in their sleep.”

TheBlaze is unable to independently verify the report.

ISIL, the militant Sunni group, aims to oust the Assad regime and in its place establish rule based on Islamic sharia law. The family which was not named was of the Alawite faith, the offshoot of Shiite Islam to which President Assad belongs.

More than 150,000 people have been killed during the Syrian civil war, which is now in its fourth year.
