89-Year-Old D-Day Vet Told by Nursing Home He Couldn’t Join His Comrades in Normandy. He Soon Went Missing. Take One Guess Where They Found Him.

"Love this"

Bernard Jordan, an 89-year-old D-Day veteran, was reportedly told by staff at the Pines nursing home in Furze Hill, also in England, that he couldn’t travel to Normandy to be with his comrades for the 70th anniversary of the famous invasion.

On Thursday, Jordan went missing. The nursing home called the police, informing them that the veteran hadn’t been seen since leaving at around 10:30 a.m. that morning, the Daily Mail reports.

So where did he go?

The Royal Navy veteran put on his war medals under a raincoat and met his former comrades on a coach. They arrived at a hotel in Ouistreham, northwestern France, about 12 hours later. He was going to Normandy -- with or without permission.

Meanwhile, officers were searching the area back at the nursing home, looking at hospitals and interviewing bus and taxi companies. They had no luck finding him, completely unaware that they weren’t looking in the right place.

Then the nursing home received a call from a veteran who told them that Jordan was with them in France and was doing fine. His comrades promised to get Jordan back home safely.

Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, police commander for the City of Brighton & Hove, celebrated Jordan’s presence at the D-Day remembrance in a tweet: “Love this: 89yr old veteran reported missing by care home who said he can’t go to Normandy for #DDay70 remembrance. We’ve found him there!”

Something tells us nothing or no one was going to keep the 89-year-old from joining his former comrades in Normandy.
