Things Get Painfully Awkward After an 'Error' by CNBC Host That Had Pulitzer Prize Winner Shaking His Head: 'Oh, Dear…\
June 27, 2014
A co-host of CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” caused one of the most awkward TV moments in recent memory after he accidentally “outed” Apple CEO Tim Cook as being gay. Though people have suggested he is gay, Cook has never confirmed or denied it.
After New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Jim Stewart discussed his latest column on former BP CEO John Browne’s “tortured life” as a gay chief executive at a Fortune 500 company, co-host Simon Hobbs chimed in.
“I think Tim Cook is fairly open about the fact he’s gay at the head of Apple, isn’t he?” Hobbs asked.
The entire panel went silent.
“Oh, dear, was that an error? I thought he was open about it,” Hobbs said, clearly embarrassed.
After shaking his head in apparent disapproval, Stewart said, “I don’t want to comment about anybody who might or might not be. I’m not going to out anybody.”
