Video Shows What Happens After 13.26 Inches of Rain is Dumped on Long Island in One Day

A fast-moving storm blew through the New York area on Tuesday night, drenching the center of Long Island, uprooting trees, stranding cars in flooded roadways and setting a one-day rainfall record.

From midnight to 8am, MacArthur Airport measured more than 13 inches of rain hitting the region. If that sounds like a lot of rain, it is. WABC-TV in New York reports that the state's all-time record for rainfall in one month is 14.07 inches. With two weeks still remaining in the month, and more rain in the weekend forecast, the record could be broken.

All three of Long Island's major arteries -- the Long Island Expressway, the Northern State Parkway and Southern State Parkway -- experienced closures and flooding as the deluge made the highways look more like waterways.

The local ABC affiliate was on the scene to count the abandoned cars, just after sunrise:

There were no reports of fatalities caused by the flooding.

As the water rose in the New York City suburbs, many of the station's viewers sent photos and videos documenting the unexpected weather event.
