Armed Robbers Attack Saudi Prince's Convoy in Paris

A band of armed robbers attacked a Saudi prince's diplomatic convoy in Paris Sunday night, making off with 250,000 euros in cash and official embassy documents.

Between five and eight Kalashnikov rifle-wielding assailants ambushed the convoy as it traveled from the Saudi Embassy to Paris' Le Bourget airport around 9 p.m., the New York Times reported. The thieves targeted a Mercedes minivan at the front of the procession and took control of the vehicle.

Police said the assailants didn't fire their weapons and no one was hurt;  the driver and two other passengers were eventually released on the side of the road.

The car's burnt-out shell was later found abandoned near the site of the attack, the cash and documents gone, the Associated Press reported. Another vehicle apparently belonging to the assailants was also found.

According to the Times, prosecutors are investigating whether the heist could have been an inside job. It's been labeled an “armed theft by an organized gang"; no arrests have been made.

French officials did not name the prince, who was said to have since left the country. The French Foreign Ministry called the attack "unacceptable," according to the AP.
