In a shocking incident caught on video, a good Samaritan is seen trying to stop a group of protesters seemingly attempting to loot and destroy a Radio Shack in Berkeley, California — and then getting struck in the face with a hammer for his efforts.
The video shows a man in a bike helmet trying to keep rowdy protesters away from the business, particularly one unidentified protester in a black hoodie. The person in the hoodie is then seen smashing the man in the face with a hammer as the victim turned is head to assess the tense situation.
“Oh, my god!” one person is heard screaming after seeing the vicious assault.
The victim was actually a fellow protester, according to Berkeleyside. The news website reported that there were a “series of aggressive interactions between protesters who wanted to keep the peace and stop those who were breaking windows at Radio Shack and those who were encouraging the vandalism.”
The victim was reportedly taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A police investigation into the assault is underway.
There have been several violent protests over alleged police brutality in Berkeley following a grand jury's decision not to indict the New York City police officer who put Eric Garner in a chokehold before he eventually died.
