The 10 Loneliest Big Cities on the Planet. Six of Them Are English-Speaking.

Planet Earth can be a lonely place.

On Saturday, Reddit user darinhq posted a list of the most isolated major cities in the world, culled from global census websites and close attention to an atlas.

By keeping the consideration limited to cities containing more than 500,000 people, the list focused on big cities far away from other big cities.

The No. 1 most isolated major city on the globe: Auckland, New Zealand, which is more than 1,300 miles away from the nearest 500,000+ city.

At No. 2 was Perth, Australia...

...while Manaus, Brazil rounded out the top three.

All told, six of the 10 most isolated big cities are in English-speaking countries, representing Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa.

The relatively well-settled U.S. doesn't have a city on the list until No. 22, which was surprisingly an East Coast city: Jacksonville, Florida, which is a 340-mile drive from the nearest city with half a million people in it.

The western, mountainous Denver comes in right below Jacksonville at No. 23.
