Black Brunch' Restaurant Protesters Disrupt 'White Spaces' in NYC, Oakland
January 04, 2015
"We interrupt your brunch time to let you know there is a war on Black lives. We will not stay silent."
Protesters entered restaurants in New York City and Oakland, California, for what organizers called “Black Brunch” over the weekend, Yahoo News reported.

— Lee Romney (@leeromney) January 4, 2015One tweet posted by the New York City group read "every 28 hours a Black unarmed civilian is murdered by the State. This is why we disrupt."
On Sunday about three dozen protesters disrupted patrons at Manhattan spots such as Lallisse, Maialino and Pershing Square, Yahoo News said, adding that protesters called them predominantly “white spaces.” They used the hashtag #BlackBrunchNYC.

— Reuben Telushkin (@telushk) January 4, 2015While some supported the protesters, others were none too pleased about demonstrations:
How dare folks go out for an omelette with friends and family on a Sunday! #blackbrunchnyc #BlackBrunch
— Ted (@TBillsss) January 4, 2015#BlackBrunch might have worked better if it wasn't in January. A lot of white people are dieting right now and just had quinoa at home.
— Yale Cohn (@YaleCohn) January 4, 2015I find #BlackBrunch to be hilarious. They're targeting urban liberals, alienating potential allies.
Didn't think this through, did you?
— Bob Owens (@bob_owens) January 4, 2015There were similar protests in Oakland. Here's one clip posted on Saturday:
